Geordie Greep of black midi began his 2025 North American solo tour at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom, and he swung back through on Saturday to close out this run with a sold-out show at Brooklyn’s Warsaw with NNAMDÏ. His 2024 solo debut, The New Sound, was a divisive release and not for everyone, but everyone at Saturday’s show was very into it as Greep and his band played for two and a half hours, during which time Brooklyn was blanketed by three inches of snow.

There is no denying the talent possessed by Greep and his band who delivered tropicalia and jazz by way of prog and punk. As I watched, trying to take it all in, my best description was slightly abstract: what if actor Jared Harris and Sepultura formed a Boz Scaggs / Steely Dan tribute band? There were no actual Boz Scaggs or Dan covers — though the night’s play-off music was Silk Degrees deep cut “We’re All Alone” (a hit for Frankie Valli and Rita Coolidge) — but they did pepper the set with their takes on Chick Corea’s “Spain” and Willie Colón’s “Cua cua ra, cua cua,” plus black midi’s “Dangerous Liaisons,” which fit in perfectly the Zappa calypso vibe of the night.

Most of the set, though, was dedicated to The New Sound, and they played all of it apart from “If You Are But a Dream,” and had the packed room bouncing up and down for most of the night, where applicable. Songs flowed into each other, instrumental jams were lengthy and wild, there were marionettes at one point, and Greep’s unusual frontman energy rarely wavered. I left dazed, which made walking out into the winter wonderland just before midnight just a little more magical.

Check out photos of the whole night by Emilio Herce, plus full video of the Warsaw show, below.

Geordie and his band will be back in North America this spring, where they’ll play a much bigger NYC show at Brooklyn Paramount on May 17.
