When it’s released next year, Barbarian director Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil will be the eighth live action movie based on the video games, with the upcoming film said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games.” We’ve heard that before, of course, but what exactly does that mean in regards to Cregger’s fresh new vision?
Zach Cregger was on hand to tease Resident Evil during Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon last night, and IGN relays some of what Cregger had to say in an article this morning.
According to Cregger, his Resident Evil will be “unlike any of the previous films.”
The filmmaker explains, “There’s a moment that comes in almost every Resident Evil game where you find yourself in a dark passageway, your health is almost zero and there’s no way around. You have to go through but you know there’s something awful for you in the darkness. That is a thrill that the Resident Evil games have perfected.”
“My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B,” Cregger continues, “as they descend deeper into hell.”
The Hollywood Reporter recently told us, “sources say the new project is decidedly on the horror track. It is also said to have elements of a wilderness survival thriller.”
After seven live action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen, with Cregger writing and directing. Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil hits theaters September 18, 2026.
