“Thunderbolts” Fights To A $76 Million Debut

It was projected that Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts*” would debut to $70-75 million, and the results were pretty close – the title looks set to take in a $76 million debut haul domestically.

That number is on par with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Ant-Man and The Wasp” in their debuts; both films ended up earning a little over $200 million domestically.

Boasting an A- CinemaScore, reviews are a big improvement over “Captain America: Brave New World” which debuted to a B- CinemaScore, but also a decidedly bigger $88.8 million opening weekend.

Internationally, the $180 million-budgeted film has done $86.1 million, bringing its global debut to $162.1 million – again just ahead of projections, which were suggesting a $160 million worldwide start.

The opening is being seen as a win, especially compared to last May’s first weekend when “The Fall Guy” bombed right out of the gate with $27.7 million in its domestic debut last May.

“Sinners” came in second with a 28% drop in its third weekend to a $33 million three-day haul. Domestically, it sits at $179.9 million, with a further $56.8 million from overseas.

“A Minecraft Movie” is still strong in third place with $13.7 million (down 40%) in its fifth weekend, bringing its domestic total up to $398.2 million and a further $475.2 million overseas for a global total now at $873.4 million—easily the year’s highest grossing Hollywood release to date.

“The Accountant 2” was fourth with $9.5 million and “Until Dawn” fifth with $3.8 million – the film’s dropping 61% and 53% respectively in their second weekends. In limited release, the Nic Cage-led “The Surfer” debuted to $674,000 over 884 screens while the controversy-laden “Rust” bombed with $25,000 from 115 screens.
