“The Last of Us” and “Game of Thrones” star Bella Ramsey has reportedly been offered the lead role of Joan of Arc in Baz Luhrmann’s next film “Jehanne d’Arc” at Warner Bros. Pictures.
DanielRPK (via WoR) broke the story, indicating the actress is interested and casting for the project is currently underway. No word on a production start date, but Luhrmann had been scouting locations earlier this year.
One issue will be Ramsey’s schedule filming the third season of “The Last of Us”. The show has been renewed, but no word on production dates for the new season which will take months to film. That said, depending on how they adapt the remainder of “The Last of Us Part II” game, Ramsey’s time commitments on the next season could be notably less than first two and thus give her time to do this.
The epic follows the young French peasant girl who claimed to be acting under divine guidance. She became a military leader during France’s Hundred Years’ War with the English.
Ultimately she was honored as a defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orleans as well as helping install Charles VII to power. After two defeats and a brief capture, she was burned at the stake for heresy.
Luhrmann is coming off his “Elvis” biopic which was nominated for eight Oscars and had a $288 million global gross. He previously attempted a historical biopic about Alexander the Great back in the early 2000s, but that project collapsed in development.
Joan’s story has been adapted multiple times before, most famously in the 1928 film classic “The Passion of Joan of Arc”. Dueling projects about her took place in 1999 – a Canadian mini-series starring Leelee Sobieski and the Luc Besson-directed Milla Jovovich-led film “The Messenger” the same year.
