Saturday’s release of the full trailer for the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” has broken new records to the premium cabler.
Within its first three days, the trailer pulled in 158 million global views across platforms, setting a new record for HBO and Max originals. It also outperformed previous trailers and teasers by a margin of at least 160%.
The first season averaged around 32 million cross-platform viewers in the U.S. – one of HBO’s biggest shows to date and quadrupling the same-day audience of the Season 1 finale which set a record for same-day viewership with 8.2 million across platforms.
The record-breaking comes as “The Last of Us” franchise creator Neil Druckmann sat down with “28 Days Later” writer Alex Garland for a ‘creator on creator’ video from Sony on YouTube the other day with the pair spending nearly an hour talking about each other’s work.
Druckmann speaks about how “28 Days Later” partly inspired “The Last of Us” game and Garland reveals how “The Last of Us” had a big impact on Danny Boyle’s upcoming “28 Years Later” film. Garland says:
“Let me say this. The Last of Us is better than 28 Days. The Last of Us is better than 28 Days. Or at least the writing is – I’m not going to talk about the directing, that would be a silly thing, so not that.
I know what 28 Days is, I know what I did, I know what that process was. The thing about The Last of Us was I was like, ‘oh, this is so much more sophisticated and moving’. It was moving. I’m not dissing 28 Days, I’m very proud of it, it’s a nice part of my life, but seriously, The Last of Us is another level so yeah, of course I was influenced by it. I was like, ‘s—’.”
The second season of HBO’s live action adaptation of “The Last of Us” premieres on April 13th in the US.
The PC version of “The Last of Us Part II” game, which serves as the source material for the upcoming second and potential third seasons of the HBO show, comes out on April 3rd.
