Stream the ‘Real Bay Shit’ comp with new songs from Scowl, Spy, Sunami & more Bay Area hardcore bands

Regional music scenes can sometimes seem like a dying breed in our internet-fueled age, but they do still exist, and right now the Bay Area has one of the strongest hardcore scenes in the country. And now, 17 Bay Area hardcore bands have come together with local label Creator-Destructor Records for the Real Bay Shit compilation, which will benefit Crossthread, a San Jose-based nonprofit that’s working to open a new local all-ages DIY venue. The comp includes new and previously-unreleased songs from Scowl, Spy, Sunami, Big Boy, Spinebreaker, Outta Pocket, Hands of God, Extinguish, Field of Flames, Doomsday, Forced To Suffer, No Right, and more, and it’s a musically diverse comp that ranges from fast hardcore punk to chugging metalcore to death metal to melodic post-hardcore and more. The Scowl song, “Horrible Feeling,” comes in the midst of the rollout for their upcoming Dead Oceans debut Not Hell, Not Heaven, and it finds vocalist Kat Moss bouncing back and forth between the melodic clean-singing that fuels the album’s lead singles and the ferocious screams of Scowl’s earlier work. Spy’s song, “My Problem,” comes out the same day as their great new EP Seen Enough and it’s a no-frills hardcore ripper that hits as hard as everything on that short-but-sweet EP. I’ve been making my way through the comp as I write this, and the whole thing sounds great. It feels like the kind of regional-scene-defining comp that we don’t see enough of anymore, and if you’re only familiar with the bigger bands that are on this, you’re bound to discover something new to love.
