Stephen Colbert repeatedly dragged Elon Musk during his monologue on Thursday’s “The Late Show,” joking at one point that “millions of young people” can’t stand him — “and those are just his kids.”
Soon after, he mocked a sycophantic Republican congressman who penned a truly embarassing poem about Musk, by finishing the poem to more accurately describe the South African billionaire.
Colbert got to these jokes talking about all the damage and chaos Musk is causing to the U.S. government — and by extention, the actual U.S., noting “Turns out randomly firing a lot of Americans isn’t that popular with a lot of Americans. One new poll found that 58% oppose laying off large numbers of government workers. And a different poll of 18 to 34 year olds found that 71% disapprove of Doge. Yes, millions of young people cannot stand Elon Musk, and those are just his kids.”
Colbert then noted how this unpopularity is sparking a huge increase in attendance at Republican town halls, where voters are yelling at their representatives to stop this stuff. This was how he got to the topic of the poem.
“Congressional Republicans called Musk to Capitol Hill, where they took a firm stance against this unelected oligarch, and gently questioned him. Yes, the GOP is using that classic strategy, ‘Good cop, nicer cop,'” COlbert joked.
“One guy who justified the love fest was Alabama Senator and proud owner of double D earlobes, Tommy Tuberville. Tuberville said, of Doge, I don’t want to get in their way. They know what they’re doing a hell of a lot more than I do. For once, I agree with you, sir. I think pretty much everyone, I think pretty much everyone knows more than Tuberville,” Colbert continued.
Then Colbert noted that “the Republicans who met with Musk kissed his butt so hard, poetry came out, literally because Congressman Randy Weber of Texas, and this is real, read a poem praising Musk.”
Colbert read the poem verbatim, which went: “Elon works from dawn to dust, then it dawns on all of us. He’s figured out what’s crazy wrong. We should have known it all along.”
“First off, dude, he used the word ‘dusk’ and didn’t think to rhyme it with ‘Musk’?” Colbert mocked. Then he pulled up a book and announced to the audience he would finish the poem. Here it is, verbatim:
“With 14 kids, the head of DOGE, has clearly never worn a Troj. His claim to fame’s high tech machines, his only friends are fascist teens. With skin the tone of day old sushi, he’s super dumb and uber-douchey. While Trump sits drinking diet cola, DOGE cuts could give us all Ebola. Like Iron Man without a heart, less Tony Stark, more Tony Shart.”
