With all of the success from Slay The Princess, developer Black Tabby Games is taking the opportunity to relaunch their previous title, Scarlet Hollow, with The Roads Untraveled, a massive update with large expansions to the first two episodes, and an overhaul to aspects of the game’s visual and technical design. And you won’t have to wait too long for the update, as it will launch on Monday, March 3, just in time for Steam’s Visual Novel Fest.
And to coincide with the update, the entire reworked first episode will be available as a free demo, with the ability to directly carry your progress over into the full game.
Ahead of Episode 5’s release, Black Tabby Games has renovated the user experience with The Roads Untraveled, expanding the script by more than 70,000 words across the four released chapters, and improving the UI.
“Before diving into Scarlet Hollow’s final chapters, we wanted to take the opportunity to make its opening act more reflective of the extreme agency and deep character writing that defines the later episodes,” says Tony Howard-Arias, co-founder at Black Tabby Games. “Episode 1 was the very first game we made, and while we’re so proud of the impact it’s had on people, we’ve also learned so much since its release. We’re better game designers, better writers, and we know our characters much more intimately now than when we started. We’re so excited to give old fans an opportunity to re-explore the beginning of their journeys, and we can’t wait for a whole new crop of players to enter the Holler for the first time.”
Scarlet Hollow is an immersive horror-mystery with sharp writing, impactful choices, and meticulously hand-drawn art. What was supposed to be a quiet getaway in the rural mountains of North Carolina to meet your long-lost cousin and comfort her through her mother’s funeral, has turned into a nightmare of cryptids and other supernatural horrors. You only have to survive a week. But can you get to the bottom of these mysteries haunting Scarlet Hollow before they claim your life?
The game is being released across 7 episodes, with the remaining three episodes currently in development being released as free updates. Scarlet Hollow is currently in Early Access on Steam, with the final release expected in 2026.
