Ryan Coogler Confirms THE X-FILES Is His Next Project and He's Talked to Gillian Anderson

The X-Files is officially headed for a new chapter, and Ryan Coogler (Black Panther and Sinners) is ready to open the file. While chatting on Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler confirmed that rebooting The X-Files is the very next project on his slate. “I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it,” he said. He also said, “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f—ing scary.”And yes, he’s already had conversations with Gillian Anderson about coming back to the role of Dana Scully. He said: “I’ve spoken to the great Gillian Anderson. She’s incredible. Fingers crossed there.” He added, “We’re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.”Gillian Anderson has previously weighed in on the idea of Coogler’s reboot, and she’s not ruling anything out. In fact, she sounds pretty intrigued. “I cannot think of a better way around for a reboot to happen,” Anderson said, calling Coogler “a bit of a genius. Whether I am involved in it is a whole other thing.“I’m not saying no. I think he’s really cool and I think if he did it, it would probably be done incredibly well. And maybe I’ll pop in for a little something something.” The X-Files originally ran from 1993 to 2002 with nine seasons of UFOs, monsters, government secrets, and that sweet Mulder-Scully tension. Two feature films and a two-season revival (2016–2018) followed, but a new reboot in the hands of Coogler will be the freshest take yet.Even original series creator Chris Carter seems to be on board, revealing last year that Coogler is planning to “remount The X-Files with a diverse cast” under his Disney TV deal. “So, he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory,” Carter said. “We’re steeped in conspiracies,” he added. It’ll be interesting to see what Coogler has planned for The X-Files. I hope that he and his team manage reach the bar that was set by the original series.
