Sony released its third quarter financial results for the 2024 fiscal year, revealing some fairly interesting information. It may have been presumed the PS5 didn’t do too hot between October and December 2024 considering the platform didn’t have any big releases and the great Concord debacle of 2024 was still pretty fresh. However, that does not seem to be the case. The company’s Game & Network Services Segment actually saw a record high operating income.

Sony also announces PS5 has now shipped 75 million units worldwide

According to Sony’s financial results, operating income for its Game & Network Services Segment increased 37% compared to Q3 FY23 to 118.1 billion yen. This is a record high for the quarter, with the company claiming higher revenue from network services and third-party software being a major contributing factor.

“Although we had the big hit of Marvelʼs Spider-Man 2 in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, operating income increased 37% year-on-year to 118.1 billion yen, a record high for the third quarter in the segment, primarily due to the impact of higher revenue from network services and third-party software, as well as improved profitability of hardware,” says the third quarter financial results for fiscal year 2024.

Additionally, as pointed out by VGC, Sony reported 9.5 million PS5 consoles shipped during the holiday season. Since launch, this means the current-gen console has reached 75 million units shipped worldwide. Compared to the PS4 within the same time period, this is only a difference of 1.5 million units.

Looking forward, we are currently in the last quarter of Sony’s 2024 fiscal year. There aren’t any standout first-party titles releasing within the quarter. However, there are some big third-party games on the horizon, like Monster Hunter Wilds, which is a follow-up to one of Capcom’s best-selling games. Maybe Sony can get another win next quarter, maybe they won’t. We’ll have to wait until after March 31 to see how well the PS5 does at the start of 2025.
