Warner Bros. Pictures has released multiple new photos from the upcoming “Mortal Kombat” sequel, photos offering proper first looks at several characters.
These include Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Martyn Ford as the menacing Shao Kahn and Adeline Rudolph as Kitana along with the returning Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion.
Cage was only teased in the first film, not shown in person, with “The Boys” actor Urban officially taking on the role for the sequel. Ed Boon, co-creator of the franchise and head of gaming developer NetherRealm Studios, tells EW:
“His integration into the Mortal Kombat story and universe is a big part of what this movie explores. He’s a washed-up Hollywood guy thrown into this magical, ultra-violent thing. Karl, his depiction of Johnny Cage is different than our games in some ways. He’s adding his own flare to it, but I think it’ll feel fresh. There’s like a novelty factor in there.”
He adds that Cage serves as the audience lens into the new story in much the same way Lewis Tan’s Cole did in the first film, and he says some of the biggest laughs from advanced screenings have come from Cage’s introduction scene.
The first film saw Outworld sorcerer Shang Tsung (Chin Han) and his forces attempt to wipe out Earth’s champions before the tournament began. With the sequel, the tournament is now underway and one which will see Shao Khan invade Earth if they lose.
Both Josh Lawson’s Kano and Max Huang’s Kung Lao return for the sequel despite their character deaths in the first film. Boon says it’s not twins, rather: “we deal with spirits and the NetherRealm and things like that. There are ways to bring dead characters back.”
The film goes bigger in scale and will travel to multiple different realms which allows for a “varied visual approach”.
“Mortal Kombat 2” is slated to open in cinemas on October 24th 2025.
