Marvel is Reportedly Planning a “Proper Send-Off” For Thor in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY and SECRET WARS
According to recent chatter in the rumor mill, Marvel Studios may be preparing to close out Thor’s story in a meaningful and possibly fatal way in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars films. This is very much just a rumor for now, so don’t start forging funeral runes just yet. But the possibility of a powerful send-off for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is picking up traction thanks to a Q&A session between CosmicCircus’s Lizzy Hill and fans. When asked about Thor’s future in the multiverse-shaking Avengers films, Hill responded with this:“From what we’ve heard, Thor will reunite with Loki at some point during these films. And he’ll essentially be one of the last OG Avengers remaining. Our friend Alex Perez did hear a rumor that Marvel wanted to give Chris Hemsworth’s Thor a proper send off in these movies in an epic way, with sources pointing to New Avengers (Vol. 3) #32 as the inspiration. Although it could be the end of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor at that very moment, that doesn’t exclude the possibility of the character’s return as he has also been told the Thor Corps, as well as other parts of Thor’s mythology from the comics, will be adapted for Secret Wars and beyond.”If this is true, we’re looking at an emotional reunion between Thor and Loki, possibly followed by Thor’s death in battle, potentially at the hands of Doctor Doom, who’s going to make a serious impact in the MCU. The reference to New Avengers #32 hints at a heroic, end-of-the-line moment for Thor. In the comic, Thor battles The Beyonders to put an end to the Incursions destroying the Multiverse. His arm is ripped off, and he and Hyperion die in battle as they make one final stand against the powerful cosmic entities. But this is Marvel we’re talking about. Just because someone dies doesn’t mean they stay dead. Of course, there’s always the nuclear option with the possibility of Marvel rebooting the whole cinematic universe post-Secret Wars. If that happens, all bets are off. Hemsworth’s Thor could be replaced entirely, or we might get a fresh take via Thor Corps and other mythological adaptations. At the end of the day, this could all be nonsense. Studios toss around dozens of story directions before landing on the final cut, and sometimes the leaks are just old drafts that escaped the writer’s room. What do you think? Should Thor’s saga come to a close? Or should Marvel keep him around for a little longer?
