Dave Filoni Opens Up About His Upcoming STAR WARS Movie and the Grand New Republic Gameplan

Dave Filoni took the stage at Star Wars Celebration to share a sneak peek at Ahsoka Season 2, teasing fans with a slick concept trailer for the upcoming season. But while the crowd was buzzing about Ahsoka’s return, Collider caught up with Filoni to talk about something fans are even more curious about, his long-gestating Star Wars feature film.If you’ve been following the Star Wars shows on Disney+, you already know there’s a bigger game being played. The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and other spinoff series have been slowly weaving together a story set in the chaotic era following Return of the Jedi, and Filoni’s movie is expected to be the major crossover event that ties it all together. When asked about the status of the project, Filoni explained why it’s taking its time:“It’s a long development. One of the reasons why is I like to work on very large arcs, and I try to factor in all the things that I’m creating simultaneously and look at them and say, ‘Well, how do we do unique things? What are unique set pieces, and where is the story going? What’s the play of the story?’”Filoni isn’t treating this like a one-off Star Wars story. He’s thinking of it more like a grand strategy, playing 4D space chess with timelines and characters that span multiple series.“I ask myself these questions. I have general outlines for all these things, general timelines for all these things. I keep moving the pieces on the board for a big strategy. That’s the way I’ve always worked since I started on Clone Wars, and I got to the end of that series finally.”That approach means the film is still in a fluid stage. Filoni admitted that what's happening in Ahsoka Season 2 could shift things in the movie. The stories are connected, and what happens in one could echo into the other.“You keep that in your mind in the future while you’re working on the present. So, right now, I’ll be on Season 2 [of Ahsoka], and as those stories develop, it might change things that would affect what’s happening in the future and what I would do. “At times, it’s a balancing act, but I’m constantly working at it, working out scenes. I know several scenes and where they would go, so you just kind of plug it in as you go.”So, while we might not have a title or a release date, Filoni is crafting this story with precision and it will be a Star Wars event designed to bring together years of character arcs and galactic tension. I’m excited to see what he ends up delivering.
