Since his debut as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Netflix’s Daredevil, Jon Bernthal has been pitch-perfect as Marvel’s gun-toting vigilante. His grounded take on the PTSD-ridden former soldier drew praise from fans and Thomas Jane, the star of the 2004 film adaptation. Returning to the iconic role in Daredevil: Born Again, it appears that Bernthal will be part of the MCU for the long haul.
While promoting The Accountant 2 at SXSW, Bernthal was asked by The Hollywood Reporter about a new project with The Punisher as a Marvel Special Presentation for Disney+. He assured fans that it would stay true to the kind of Punisher storylines told in the comics.
“I care very deeply about Frank, I’m really grateful that I’m getting the opportunity to tell the story that I think the fans deserve. We’re giving it our all and we’re trying to tell a Frank Castle story that we’re going to turn our back on the audience — it’s not going to be easy, it’s not going to be light, and I think it’s the version that this character deserves and I’m just beyond honored and grateful that we get the opportunity.”
Bernthal has been vocal about his refusal to water down the character before his official announcement of reprising the role in Born Again. His commitment to The Punisher extends to being a co-writer on the upcoming special alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green. The latter directed Bernthal in the 2022 HBO miniseries We Own This City.
Bernthal continued by confirming that the special, tentatively scheduled to arrive in 2026, will be something unique but similar to the tone of the short-lived Punisher Netflix series from 2017-2019.

“It’s going to be dark; Frank has no interest in breaking out the darkness. It’s not going to be easy. I don’t know if that’s the Netflix tone then that’s what it’s going to be., It will not be Punisher-lite, I promise you that.”
