IHG abolished award categories back in 2019 and had a 30% devaluation right amid the pandemic back in 2021 and again last year (read more here).

IHG has apparently changed brand-specific award point caps based on a discussion on an FT thread (access here) that a reader alerted us about. There still appears to be a cap of 500,000 points per night (Six Senses Kyoto).

Kimpton Shinjuku Tokyo

You may now have to pay up to 201,000 points per night!

InterContinental Osaka

The lovely InterContinental Osaka is now up to 218,000 points per night.

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau

There still appears to be a cap of 250,000 points per night for stays at InterContinental hotels.

Six Sense Kyoto

The maximum point requirements for Six Senses Kyoto is still half a million points per night.

InterContinental Bora Bora Thalasso

The pricing here is getting quite close to the brand maximum.

Conclusion

IHG is playing with fire here.

If you cannot reasonably use your points at one of the aspirational hotels, why would you stay with them or swipe their cobranded card(s)?

The problem with these programs that have gone dynamic and don’t have award charts is that you can never count on using your points for stays at one of the better hotels unless you earn points very fast.
