Filming on the third season of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” gets underway in a few weeks with a new eight-episode season that’s expected to be in production through October ahead of a 2026 airing.
HBO officially renewed the show back in June last year for a third season, just days before the second premiered, with the show said to be aiming for a four-season run in total.
Now, showrunner Ryan Condal has shared some new details with Gold Derby about production on the third season, confirming scripts have been completed, new characters will be introduced, and ‘four major events’ from the book will make it to screen:
“For Season 3, there’s much more shape and depth to it right out of the gate, because you’re writing for people you know. There are some major new characters this season, but 85% of them we already knew who they were and it just makes it much more rewarding to write.
Season 2 is huge. Season 3 is huger, in many ways. There are, by my quick count on stage, four major events from the book that we get to adapt and realize in three dimensions in this season. That’s really exciting on a scope-and-scale perspective, and I think it’s the thing the show does really well. The things that we’re building are mind-boggling.
He also says the team got to “have a little fun” this season with a ‘conceptual episode’ that doesn’t follow the usual structure of an episode of the series, saying it is a “very character-driven” one-off episode that he thinks is “really great”.
Returning cast members for the new season include Emma D’Arcy as Rhaenyra, Matt Smith as Daemon, Olivia Cooke as Alicent, Rhys Ifans as Otto, Steve Toussaint as Corlys, Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria, Fabien Frankel as Criston Cole, Harry Collett as Jace, Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon II, Ewan Mitchell as Aemond, Bethany Antonia as Baela, Phoebe Campbell as Rhaena, Phia Saban as Helaena, Tom Taylor as Cregan Stark, Tom Bennett as Ulf White, and Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne.
Franchise creator George R.R. Martin has also confirmed the HBO is already working on a second season to the next “Game of Thrones” spin-off series “The Hedge Knight” even as the first season doesn’t begin airing until later this year.
The third season of “House of the Dragon” is expected to air sometime in 2026.
