There is a general strike in Greece tomorrow, and air traffic controllers are also participating in it. This strike will bring air traffic to/from Greece to its knees.

Athens International Airport (ATH) has announced that there will be no general passenger flights landing or taking off tomorrow (April 9, 2025), and the situation should be the same at other Greek airports.

You can access Aegean here.

Athens International Airport Announcement:

Strike of the Air Traffic Controllers’ Association on 09.04.2025.

We would like to inform you that due to strike of the Air Traffic Controllers’ Association participating in the general strike of the Supreme Administration of Greek Civil Servants Trade Unions (ADEDY), on Wednesday 9th of April, no flights from/to Athens International Airport El. Venizelos will be operated from 00:00 to 23:59 (local time).

For further information regarding flights, please contact your airline or travel agent.

Aegean’s Announcement:

Due to the participation of Air traffic Controller’s in the upcoming 24-hour strike by ADEDY on 9th of April, all passengers with affected reservations can proceed:

1. With a ticket reissue free of charge through our call center at +30 2106261000

2. Apply for a credit voucher online through aegeanair.com and olympicair.com

3. Apply for a full refund through aegeanair.com and olympicair.com

Note that passengers flying on Aegean or Olympic Air and all passengers departing from Greece or traveling to Greece on EU/EEA/UK airlines are covered by EC 261/2004 or UK261.

Airlines are required to rebook you to your final destination at the earliest possible, even if this means rebooking you on other airlines i.e. if you are only transiting through Greece tomorrow, request the airline to rebook you on another service.

The EC 261/2004 and UK261 cover Duty to Care that applies even during strikes. This means that airlines are required to pay for your accommodation and meals. You may have to book and pay for these first by yourself, but remember to request that the airlines cover them.

You can always choose a refund if you don’t need that ticket anymore, and airlines must refund them, even when the underlying ticket is nonrefundable.

Conclusion

Luckily, this is not yet the busiest travel period for flights to/from Greece, but Easter is soon, which is a big holiday in the country.

I am actually flying on Aegean at the end of the month, and I hope that there aren’t any disruptions then.
