A new “Star Wars” animated TV series is in the works, one set to focus on iconic red-and-black face antagonist Darth Maul, who originated in the prequel trilogy.
Actor Sam Witwer, who voiced the character across the various animated series and a brief appearance in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” will return to reprise the role.
Titled “Maul – Shadow Lord,” the project was announced as part of a panel at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo on Friday celebrating 20 years of Lucasfilm Animation. The final shot of the video appeared to show a first glimpse at the new Maul series – check out the video in full below.
Lucasfilm’s CCO Dave Filoni and animation VP Athena Portillo spoke at the panel about the series, and says it will offer a lot of insight into Maul’s motivations:
“Unfortunately I can’t tell you too much, but what I can say is Sam Witwer’s involvement in the show has been pristine. I’m very excited about him being able to review the scripts and provide input in all of that as well. Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation, and so it’s very important to hear his thoughts as well for the character depth.
We learn some different things about this character. He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”
It’s also confirmed that events of the series unfold around a year after “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” with Maul “dusting himself off a bit” after taking on Ahsoka.
