Unfortunate news coming from ANA Mileage Club as the carrier has published an update on the website announcing the end to its most lucrative redemption option, the Round The World mileage award tickets.
Effective June 24, 2025 no new award tickets for Round the World Travel will be issued anymore, so the option will be eliminated entirely, not just increased in price.
You can access details about ANA’s Round the World awards on their website (see here).
Existing tickets are still able to be flown and/or modified according to the terms and conditions of the award but this can also come with traps so I recommend to be careful before redeeming something ad hoc without clear plans.
The message on the ANA website, as linked above, is:
From June 24, 2025 onward, no new Star Alliance Round the World award tickets will be issued. Star Alliance Round the World award tickets issued up to June 23, 2025 can be used as usual until their ticket expiration date, including any changes or similar factors.
So this means the best option to use your ANA miles is off the table and that’s very unfortunate, especially after the recent devaluation of the ANA Mileage Club program.
Beware: Massive ANA Mileage Club Award Chart Devaluation Effective April 18, 2024
This happened a bit over a year ago, and I managed to squeeze one pretty nice redemption in before that devaluation took effect. Back then, I saw the writing on the wall and urged readers that they might want to look at burning their miles for any kind of attractive awards, as further changes might be coming.
I saw the RTW awards on the chopping block, and unfortunately, in this case, I turned out to be correct.
Booking RTW awards with ANA was never for the faint of heart. It required meticulous research of available flights, piecing together a proper itinerary, calculating it with Grand Circle Mapper and then waiting long times to find an ANA agent to book it. It was worth it though, I ended up doing three of these RTWs.
Award Success: ANA Round The World Award In Business Class For Only 105,000 Miles
Eventually, all good things come to an end. I think this award was a little-known secret that wasn’t booked all too often until it got made popular by travel bloggers and the wide influx of Amex points from the U.S. to the point where ANA had to pull the plug. These awards must have cost them a fortune as partner airlines want to get paid for all these segments.
ANA Mileage Club will also – once again – increase the prices for awards on June 24, 2025, and it’s not pretty, especially for international flights in First Class.
Affected Zones, Service Classes, and Required Mileage
The revised required mileage will apply for the following zones, classes and seasons.
For details on the required mileage, please see Required Mileage Charts.
Economy Class and Premium Economy
- Flights depart from/to all zones during high season
Business Class and First Class
- Flights depart to/from South Korea and Russia 1 (Zone2), Asia 1 (Zone 3), Asia 2 (Zone 4) and Oceania (Zone 10) in all seasons
- Flights depart to/from Hawaii (Zone 5), North America (Zone 6) and Europe and Russia 2 (Zone 7) during high season
You have to price your individual zones and see how it affects you, but just as an example, First Class between Japan and the U.S. will soon cost 300,000 miles per Round Trip – a 50% increase. Business Class will go up from 110,000 miles to 165,000 miles. Brutal!
This will also affect the change of wholly unused tickets straight away, but tickets that have been partially flown can be changed without any add-collect:
It’s not all doom and gloom. ANA will make one positive change on the same date as they’ll finally allow one-way award bookings, which has always been the biggest drawback of the entire program. So far, only round trips were allowed, which drastically hindered members from making proper bookings, as all too often, only one sector was available.
I commend ANA for giving at least some adequate notice in this case (as usual for Japanese companies) since other programs just devalued their awards overnight, leaving customers hanging out to dry.
A word of warning if you plan on making a future RTW redemption: Once issued, you can’t make any changes to the routing or carrier anymore. You will need to cancel and rebook. If you have started the ticket and flown even just one coupon, then no changes and cancellations are possible at all anymore.
Conclusion
ANA Mileage Club, the loyalty program of All Nippon Airways, is making some additional modifications to its frequent flyer redemptions effective June 24, 2025 and they are mostly negative.
Only a year after the most recent devaluation, Round the World Awards will be discontinued, and the prices for many international awards will go up even more.
As a little plus, the program will allow you to book one-way awards from the same date. Details and booking ability aren’t yet available, but that will follow soon.
I repeat my advice from last year: Use up your ANA Miles if you have something in mind, and don’t transfer any new points to ANA just for a random future use.
