After a superb finale to Season 3, The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins says he’s hopeful for more seasons at Amazon. Following S3’s conclusion Judkins spoke with THR about all the big events from that finale. However he was also asked about the future. Amazon has yet to greenlight any future season of the show. Which does seem peculiar after delivering the best season of the show so far. Plus, the fact we know amazon themselves caused a lot of the issues that were present in Season 1.

The studio originally commissioned 10 episode season and then pulled funding just as production was beginning to only 8 per season. That decision has definitely hampered such a massive series, which has struggled to condense the material to such a short season. Especially in that opening season, which forced a post-COVID quick rewrite and a poor final two episodes.

Season 4 and beyond?

“That is the same thing that I’ve been sort of asking Amazon — what is the end game for the show? I really want to deliver this full series, so how do we best do that? I think one reason we went with Amazon, because we had options of who was going to buy the series when we first went out with it, is that Amazon felt like a place where they do want to invest in shows for the long term.”

“There are not a lot of places doing that anymore. For Wheel of Time, it’s really important for us to be somewhere that does want to invest in shows for the long term and not just for the splash and leave. So I am hopeful that we will get to finish this story. I think it’s a story that in many ways is important because of its length, and because it gets better as it goes.”

“The books get better as they go and the show is getting better as it goes. I think we can continue that arc if we’re allowed to continue. But it is different [now]. Television’s moving in a direction where things just come in, splash and leave. But the history of television is that its strength is longform storytelling; that you stick with it and you love these characters and you follow them through 60 to 100 hours. That’s where television has its strength. That’s where it’s better than movies, at telling those kinds of stories. So I’m hopeful for our industry that shows like Wheel of Time do get to tell the whole story. I think it’s important for television. It’s what we do best, and so we should be finishing these stories.”

Another disappointing aspect is that Amazon greenlit Rings of Power for a full five Seasons. Yet, the cost for those 5 seasons overall will be probably more than 8 seasons of Wheel of Time. Rings of Power is far more well known, but it’s also absolutley criminally bad TV and an even poorer representation of Tolkien’s mythology. A saw recently a former studio exec advised Amazon to scrap it, apologise and start again. That won’t happen, but I won’t ever watch it again.

Amazon get your act together, this is a good series and the audience looks to be growing. Not only should you approve it for 8 Seasons you should be upping the budget for 10 episode seasons and we’ll get even better paced TV.
