INDIA. Delhi Duty Free has recorded its highest-ever annual sales of INR21.77 billion (US$261 million) for the financial year ending 31 March. This marks a +12% increase compared to FY 2023-24.
The company, anchor travel retailer at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport, credits the growth to a stable and growing Indian economy, continued rise in outbound travel and a renewed influx of global tourists.
Delhi Duty Free also attributed the record sales to the rising aspirations of the global Indian diaspora, coupled with higher discretionary spending by resident Indians.
Delhi Duty Free CEO Ashish Chopra commented: “This is a landmark moment for Delhi Duty Free – one that reflects not just strong numbers, but a shared vision, tireless effort and a commitment to excellence at every level of the organisation.
“Behind this success is a remarkable team that has consistently pushed boundaries, remained agile in the face of change and embraced innovation across the board – from product, pricing and partnerships to customer experience.
“We’ve worked relentlessly to align ourselves with the best global benchmarks in duty-free retailing, while staying deeply rooted in understanding the evolving needs of our Indian and international customers.
“This milestone energises us to aim even higher and continue building a retail experience that travellers truly look forward to.”
Delhi Duty Free witnessed double-digit growth in international passenger volumes, benefiting from Delhi International Airport’s status as a key gateway to northern India.
The retailer also introduced strategic retail initiatives, including product updates, category expansions and visual merchandising innovations – ensuring parity with global duty-free standards.
Its dedicated premiumisation strategy brought in exclusive brand tie-ups and elevated product lines, targeting affluent Indian travellers. These efforts were anchored by customer insight programmes, trend-watching, passenger feedback and in-market research.
As reported, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) parent GMR Airports recently confirmed the move to take over Delhi Duty Free in Q2 of the new financial year (July is the slated month). DIAL has also revealed plans to renovate Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 2. The project is scheduled to start in the 2025-26 financial year, with completion targeted for Q2 to address increasing passenger traffic.
