Actor Daniel Craig has responded to this morning’s news of long-time James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli stepping back from the 007 franchise and handing over creative control to Amazon MGM.
The historic agreement has shaken, not stirred Hollywood and will see the James Bond intellectual property rights housed in a new joint venture between the duo and Amazon.
All will remain co-owners of the franchise, but the studio will now have full creative control on future projects after being a passive partner on the franchise since acquiring MGM in 2021. Deadline has reported that the new deal has cost Amazon around $1 billion.
Craig played Bond for five films from 2006-2021 and worked with Wilson and Broccoli throughout his tenure. In a statement to Variety, Craig says:
“My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished. I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well deserved) retirement and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them.”
Wilson, now 87, is fully retiring from Hollywood. Broccoli, now 64, will continue in Hollywood but working as a producer elsewhere. .
There’s been a bunch of reports in the press about the franchise’s future, but there have been no definitive announcements as yet regarding what Amazon MGM’s plans are for the character.
Amazon chief Jeff Bezos has already asked his followers on X who they want to play James Bond next.
