CW’s “Powerpuff Girls” Pilot Footage Leaks

Back in 2020, The CW announced an adult-oriented live-action “Powerpuff Girls” series which cast Chloe Bennett as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, Yana Perrault as Buttercup, and Donald Faison as Professor Utonium.

Now, footage from the pilot has leaked online and appears to have been cut into a trailer, with Warner Bros. Discovery pulling down copies of said trailer as fast as it can. However it’s out there now on social media and other platforms, and reaction so far seems to be decidedly unimpressed.

Sources at CW have confirmed to Variety that the footage is real, but a final trailer was never assembled before the project was cancelled. They add “the leaked footage would not have passed CW standards” and suggest the clip is potentially a “rejected trailer from a third party”.

The pilot was shot in 2021 but never aired and The CW ditched the series which was returned to Warner Bros. TV who was free to continue developing it. Warners opted to scrap it and by 2023 it was “no longer in development in any form or fashion.”

Serving as a sequel to the original fan-favorite Cartoon Network animated series created by Craig McCracken, the show saw the pint-sized superheroes now as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting.

After the girls accidentally kill the adult, human version of Mojo Jojo, Blossom runs away, Buttercup becomes a firefighter, and Bubbles moves to Hollywood. Meanwhile, Mojo’s vengeful son Joseph ‘Jojo’ Mondel Jr. (Nicholas Podany) becomes the mayor of Townsville and brainwashes the citizens – forcing the Powerpuff Girls to reunite.

The pilot hailed from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, with Cody, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and David Madden executive producing and Maggie Kiley directing.
