A new report has indicated that Timothee Chalamet, who is widely tipped to take the Best Actor Oscar tonight for his work in “A Complete Unknown,” may be starring in a new project at Disney.
DanielRPK reports that Chalamet has apparently been offered the lead role in Disney’s “Ichabod,” a live-action take on Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” short story.
Filmmaker Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (“Me, Earl and the Dying Girl,” “The Current War”) is reportedly attached to direct the project but no further details have yet emerged.
Disney famously adapted the work as part of the 1949’s animated anthology feature “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad.” which adapted Irving’s story as well as Kenneth Grahame’s legendary children’s book “The Wind in the Willows”. Bing Crosby narrated the ‘Sleepy Hollow’ segment.
Thus the new film could technically qualify as another Disney live-action adaptation – those often reimagining their original works to offer new perspectives (ala “Maleficent”). Irving’s story was most famously adapted into Tim Burton’s 1999 supernatural spooker “Sleepy Hollow” starring Johnny Depp, as well as a FOX TV detective procedural series of the same name starring Tom Mison as Ichabod.
The Disney take, which was closer to Irving’s work than Burton’s film was, follows Ichabod Crane – a lanky and highly superstitious schoolmaster who arrives in the eponymous small village in 1790 and is constantly pranked by the local bully, Brom Bones. Ichabod soon meets and falls in love with Katrina, the daughter of the richest farmer in the town.
At a local soiree, Brom tells the ghost story of a Headless Horseman who travels through the woods every year on Halloween, searching for a living head to replace the one he lost. Riding home from the party that night, Ichabod is terrified and soon comes the appearance of a real Headless Horseman – mounted on a fiery black horse and carrying a jack-o’-lantern and a sword.
Chalamet is booked to film “Dune: Messiah” in the back half of this year and is expected to work on a “Wonka” sequel in the first half of next year.
