Camper Van Beethoven playing ‘Telephone Free Landslide Victory’ 40th anniversary shows; David Lowery preps autobiographical solo LP
’Fathers, Sons and Brothers’ celebrates the Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker frontman’s “youth, family, friends and the highs and lows of his lengthy 40-year career in the music business.”

Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker bandleader David Lowery has announced a solo album, Fathers, Sons and Brothers, which will be out May 30 via Cooking Vinyl. He describes it as a musical autobiography that celebrates “his youth, family, friends and the highs and lows of his lengthy 40-year career in the music business.” It’s a three-LP / two-CD set that compiles songs from his digital-only albums In The Shadow of the Bull, Leaving Key Member Clause, and Vending Machine, along with new songs and new version of others.
“Over the years, many have encouraged me to write an autobiography,” says David. “However, it never really appealed to me. Partly because it seemed like I would have to learn an entirely new skill set, but mostly because there is a standard arc to all successful ‘rock’ autobiographies: a tough childhood, a deep passion for music, many obstacles to overcome, relentless striving, and finally, against all odds, success. And that’s not my story.”
You can listen to the song about starting Camper Van Beethoven (and their early surprise college radio hit), “I Wrote a Song Called Take the Skinheads Bowling,” below.
Speaking of “Take the Skinheads Bowling,” that song is on Camper Van Beethoven’s debut album, Telephone Free Landslide Victory, which turns 40 this year. CVB are playing two anniversary shows at San Francisco’s The Fillmore on April 26 & 27 where they’ll perform the album in full, along with lots more.
Meanwhile, Lowery’s other band, ’90s alt-rock hitmakers Cracker, is hosting its annual four-day CAMP-IN in Athens, GA starting tonight, and the band have other dates as well. All dates are listed below.
