Britpop vets Cast announce first US shows in 29 years, opening for Brian Jonestown Massacre

Cast, the Britpop vets led by former La’s bassist John Power, have announced their first US shows since the height of Britpop (29 years to be exact). The shows are opening for The Brian Jonestown Massacre in NYC (9/9 at Webster Hall) and Philadelphia (9/10 at Union Transfer). It’s part of a very busy year for the band, probably the the most high-profile for them since the mid-’90s, which includes opening for all dates of Oasis’ UK reunion tour, and a headlining UK tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album, All Change. All dates are below.

All Change came in at #6 on our list of Best Britpop Albums of 1995 and we wrote: The La’s 1990 self-titled debut album is one of the direct precursors to Britpop and while frontman and songwriter Lee Mavers never made another album, sideman John Power proved more than up to the task of leading his own band, Cast. Enlisting Peter Wilkinson from Shack (another Liverpool band who had trouble with labels and frontmen), they formed a group who favored songs over bravado and drama. It was a formula that worked. Songs like “Alright,” “Sandstorm,” and “Finetime” sounded like classics from the get-go, with earworm choruses that stick in your head on first listen. John Leckie’s production — with layer upon layer of guitars and harmonies — makes everything pop. The real appeal of All Change is just how effortless it all seems. These songs don’t sound like they were written as much as they were always there just waiting to be heard.

While Cast never quite managed to match All Change‘s success and broke up in 2001 after their fourth album, Beetroot. Power reformed Cast in 2010 and have been going ever since, releasing another three albums, including 2024’s excellent Love is the Call, which is arguably their best since their first. Check out that album and All Change below.
