Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Warner Bros. Pictures and at least one other traditional studio are all reportedly bidding aggressively for the new Martin Scorsese film that was revealed yesterday reports Puck News.
The Hawaii-set crime caper film is set to star Dwayne Johnson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Emily Blunt and is set in turbulent 1960s & 1970s Hawaii and centered on an aspiring and charismatic mob boss.
The man engaged in a brutal and bloody war with rival crime syndicates and mainland corporations to wrest absolute control of the island’s underworld and preserve his ancestral land.
The expectation is Scorsese will “go with the highest bidder” with a streamer likely to win out (Netflix is said to have the edge right now) as Scorsese has shown he isn’t as bothered as some other celebrated auteurs about his films going theatrical or not.
The outlet also expects very high expenses, potentially resulting in another film for Scorsese in the $200 million budget range, following “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Irishman”.
Blunt and Johnson reportedly brought the idea to Scorsese and DiCaprio who then enlisted Nick Bilton to write it. The actors, director, writer, Dany Garcia, Lisa Frechette and Rick Yorn are all producing.
