Clairo and Bernie Sanders

Bernie Sanders surprised a Coachella audience by introducing Clairo‘s set yesterday (April 12), urging her fans to “fight for social justice” and praising the singer’s efforts.

Ahead of the ‘Charm‘ singer’s set at the Outdoor Theatre, Florida’s Congressman Maxwell Frost stepped on stage to introduce Sanders. Addressing the Californian crowd, the Vermont Senator told Clairo fans the country was facing “some very difficult challenges, and the future of what happens to America is dependent upon your generation”.

“You can turn away, and you can ignore what goes on, but if you do that, you do it at your own peril,” he continued. “We need you to stand up, to fight for justice. To fight for economic justice, social justice, and racial justice.”

Turning his attention towards the Trump administration – with Clairo among its vocal critics – earned a huge boo from the crowd. “I agree,” Sanders said of their reaction. “He thinks that climate change is a hoax. He is dangerously wrong, and you and I are going to have to stand up to the fossil fuel industry and tell them to stop destroying this planet.

“All over this country, not in California or Vermont from where I’m from, but Florida, where Maxwell is from and other states,” Sanders continued. “Politicians are trying to take away a woman’s right to control her own body. We need you to stand up and fight for women’s rights.”

He said the current set up of the US was “working very well for the billionaire class but not for working families” – comments which came only hours after he and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hosted a free concert in LA’s Grand Park dubbed “Bernie-chella.” The free concert saw the politicians joined by Neil Young, Maggie Rogers and Joan Baez.

Before Clairo joined the stage, Sanders gave her a proper introduction, praising her for using her voice to highlight political matters. “I’m here to introduce Clairo, not just because they are a great band, not just because Clairo at the age of 13 posted videos on the internet as a singer-songwriter,” he explained.

“I’m here because Clairo has used her prominence to fight for women’s rights, to try to end the terrible, brutal war in Gaza where thousands of women and children are being killed. So I want to thank Clairo not only for being in a great band but for the great work she’s doing.”

The political introduction comes only a day after Clairo’s Coachella billboard was vandalised by an art collective who appeared to denounce the “Late Stage Capitalism headlining the Main Stage of America.”
