Xolo Maridueña Shares Update on BLUE BEETLE Animated Series, but Future in DCU Remains Unclear
Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña is gearing up for his next adventure as Jaime Reyes, but this time it will be in animated form. During the Saturn Awards, the actor offered an update on the upcoming Blue Beetle animated series, revealing that it’s set to premiere in 2026. Maridueña also admitted that there are still plenty of unanswered questions about where his version of the character fits into James Gunn’s evolving DC Universe.Maridueña said: “I’m ready to come back. We’re hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year.”When it comes to the larger DCU, things remain a little more murky. Maridueña acknowledged that he hasn’t had many discussions with James Gunn about how—or if—his Blue Beetle will officially be part of the new DCU continuity. But, he seems to trust the process, even if he's not entirely in the loop. He said: “Look, he’s got his hands in his kitchen. I don’t want to walk in while the chef is doing his thing.“But I can say that once they’re finished with this three-course meal, I’m ready. And look, I have no reason to believe that he’s lying. Like, whatever, we’re adults, say whatever you want to say! “I’m just happy to have done this first one and I’ll continue to spread the word about that while we get the second one drafted up.”Maridueña previously shared his hope to see the project pull inspiration from anime. "Wowza, Blue Beetle is back! I'm so excited. To get to do the...I think there is an opportunity on each platform to really make something shine, right? “In the movie, you had the opportunity to do the movie stuff. In a TV show, you have the chance to do long-format stuff."He added: "In an animated show... the f*ing fact this kid likes anime and can make whatever freaking weapon he wants and has this suit that lights up... if they do the suit right in animated, I wonder if it's going to look exactly like the movie suit did or if it's going to, depending on what the art style, if it's going to look a little bit different [or the same] for branding and all that."Blue Beetle hit theaters in August 2023 as one of the last films in the now-defunct DCEU. At the time, Gunn fueled speculation about the character’s future when he posted on Instagram that Jaime Reyes “will be an amazing part of the DCU going forward!” However, since then, the status of a live-action sequel has been left hanging.
