Watch: ‘Tron: Ares,’ scored by Nine Inch Nails, releases 1st trailer
While Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score a lot of movies these days, ‘Tron: Ares’ is actually under the Nine Inch Nails banner. It’s out October 10.

The latest instalment in the intermittent Tron series, Tron: Ares, isn’t out till October 10 but it got previewed this past week Disney’s presentation at the annual CinemaCon in Las Vegas where movie studios show off their upcoming slate to theater owners. You may remember that the previous film, 2010’s Tron: Legacy sported a score by Daft Punk, and this time the music is by Nine Inch Nails. It should be noted that while Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score a lot of films and TV shows as a duo under their own names, Tron: Ares is officially credited to Nine Inch Nails. You can hear a bit of what they’re bringing to this world in the teaser trailer that was just shared today. Watch below.
Tron: Ares is directed by Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil) and stars which stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, and more along with original Tron star Jeff Bridges. This time, instead of humans going into the circuits and mainframe of the computer, the Tron characters and their light cycles and ominous Recognizers, are coming out to wreak havoc on the real world. The official synopsis says the film “follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”
“This installment is a little bit more industrial, where as Legacy was very sleek. For me it was important to change it up, make it grittier,” Rønning told Collider last year. “This is important, and even though it’s a technicality…they are doing this under the Nine Inch Nails banner, so that they style that we find very interesting. The process of getting them on board wasn’t lengthy. They really wanted to do it. Going to their rock n’ roll corner of Brentwood to work on this film with them was amazing. ‘Pinch my arm’ amazing.”
Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross scored two films last year: the awesome, techno-fueled Challengers and the more traditional orchestral vibes of Queer, both of which were directed by Luca Guadagnino. They’re also scoring Luca’s next film, #metoo thriller After the Hunt, which is due out October 17 which is one week after Tron: Ares. They are expected to also work on Guadagnino upcoming remake of American Psycho. Stay tuned.
You can catch Nine Inch Nails on tour this summer, with Brooklyn shows at Barclays Center on September 2 and 3.
