The Tibet House Benefit returned to Carnegie Hall for its 38th annual edition on Monday night (3/3), celebrating the Year of the Wood Snake and the Dalai Lama’s 90th birthday year. This year’s lineup included Arooj Aftab, Patti Smith, Tune-Yards, Orville Peck (who covered Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel #2”), Allison Russell (who joined Orville for a rendition of their collaborative Stampede track “Chemical Sunset” before doing a couple more songs without him), Laurie Anderson, Michael Stipe (who did his track with Big Red Machine, “No Time for Love like Now,” along with a cover of David Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World,” and read Max Ehrmann’s poem “Desiderata” while Laurie Anderson played violin), Tenzin Choegyal, The Bear‘s Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Jackson Browne, Angélique Kidjo, Gogol Bordello, and more.

Like most years, the show was curated and artistic directed by Philip Glass and Laurie ANderson, and Patti Smith’s band served as house band. Also as usual, the night ended with a big group rendition of Patti’s “People Have the Power.” See pictures from the whole night by Sachyn Mital below.

This show comes less than a week after Stipe reunited with his R.E.M. bandmates onstage in Athens, GA to perform “Pretty Persuasion.”
