The Pains of Being Pure at Heart played their debut LP in full + more at surprise first show in 7 years (setlist, video)
A very welcome return.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart officially begin their reunion tour in Portugal on Wednesday, but the band warmed up with a surprise show at Ridgewood, Queens venue Trans-Pecos on Monday night. It was their first show in seven years. While not officially announced, the show was unsubtly hinted at on the band’s socials and by the time they took the stage around 9:30 it was a full house. As this tour is a celebration of their 2009 self-titled debut, it features almost the entire early lineup of the band — for the first time since 2012 — with singer guitarist Kip Berman, keyboardist Peggy Wang, drummer Kurt Feldman and guitarist Christoph Hochheim, plus Eddy Marshall, who’s filling in for original bassist and new dad Alex Naidus.
They joked that this show would be “to make sure they still know how to play their songs,” but that was clearly not a problem at all, as TPOBPAH ripped their self-titled front-to-back, and sounded great. A number of these songs, including “The Tenure Itch,” “Stay Alive” and “Hey Paul,” got their first live plays since Peggy left the group in 2012. The encore featured a few choice b-sides from era: “Side Ponytail,” “Ramona” and “The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.” A great show and a very welcome return.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are playing the NYC edition of Nothing’s Slide Away festival at Brooklyn Paramount on April 26 with Swervedriver and more. The band are also playing Salt Lake City’s Kilby Block Party in May but there’s been no official North American tour announcement as of yet. Fingers crossed.
