HBO has renewed “The Last of Us” for a third season ahead of Season 2’s highly anticipated premiere on April 13.

While the first season was based on Naughty Dog’s 2013 video game of the same name, the second season only adapts part of 2020’s The Last of Us Part II.

Creators Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann previously said they they were contemplating a total of four seasons.

“It can’t be overemphasized how proud HBO is for the outstanding achievement we believe the second season of The Last of Us is,” Francesca Orsi, Executive Vice President, HBO Programming, Head of HBO Drama Series and Films, said in a statement.

“Craig, Neil, Carolyn [Strauss] and the entire executive producer team, cast and crew have delivered a masterful follow-up, and we’re thrilled to carry the power of Craig and Neil’s storytelling into what we know will be an equally moving and extraordinary third season.”

“The Last of Us” takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey as they both must traverse the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Season 2 picks up five years later, with Joel and Ellie drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind.

In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, returning cast includes Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria.

Newcomers includes Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, and Catherine O’Hara in an unspecified role.
