Texas is the Reason singer’s short-lived late-’90s band subject of new documentary

The New Rising Sons were a shortlived NYC band that were formed in the late-’90s by Garrett Klahn (Texas Is The Reason) and Drew Thomas (Into Another), and with talented songwriter/guitarist Kevin McGinnis, they had hopes of making it big in the wide-open alt-rock landscape of the era. Things looked very promising, the band signed a million dollar major label deal, but the changing climate of the music industry as they entered the ’00s — from MP3s to the NYC indie renaissance of The Strokes, Interpol and Yeah Yeah Yeahs — meant things just never quite worked their way. Filmmaker Olivia Serafini-Sauli examines the band and the era in a new documentary, Endless Calls for Fame: The Story of the New Rising Sons. Here’s the official synopsis:

Endless Calls for Fame: The Story of the New Rising Sons takes place in the gritty streets of New York City in the 1990s during a time when punk and indie rock was moving from the underground into the mainstream after the cultural tsunami of Nirvana. Using her rediscovered personal archival footage, director Olivia Serafini-Sauli shares the first- hand story of this unique musical era through the lens of one promising band’s experience, The New Rising Sons. The film brings to life a vibrant New York music scene of the past as it follows the band’s brush with stardom, their dissolution, and their journey to redemption 20 years after they were formed.

Endless Calls for Fame features rare live footage shot at clubs like Brownies, CBGB and Bowery Ballroom and includes interviews with the band, as well as Garrett Klahn, Drew Thomas, Kevin McGinnis, David Wolter, Walter Schreifels, Carl Glanville, Stephanie Seymour, Alison Wall, Ted Niceley, and more. The film is out March 14 on digital / on-demand and you can watch the trailer for it below.

Timing is right for this documentary’s release, as Texas is the Reason are reuniting (minus Norman Brannon) for this year’s Best Friends Forever fest.
