It’s been out a whole weekend, so let’s look at the Rotten Tomatoes score and discuss the reactions to Captain America: Brave New World. Let’s start with the critics view, which is not very good. The RT score for the film is currently sitting at 50% at time of writing.
It’s not a truly horrific score, but it’s pretty close, like Sony movie close. Ultimately what it means is that critics are divided. Some enjoyed it, thought it was an okay movie, but no one was raving about it. The other half of critics under RT really didn’t care for the film at all.
As far as the audience goes, again it’s mixed. The figures are 80% currently, which is definitely better than a Sony Marvel film. The online chatter as as usual skewed towards negative. Mainly because it’s currently fashionable to be anti-Marvel irrespective of the truth. ‘I so knew this was gonna be trash, and this one comment on X has convinced me’. Yet, I don’t think that’s the whole story either. Truthfully fans, like critics either think it was average to decent, or rubbish. There really is no one saying this is a ‘great’ movie.
The Complaints
I’ve heard critics and fans talk about how it feels like a TV episode, and that you can see the obvious reshoots with Giancarlo Esposito. (I have not seen it yet, so my opinion is non-existent at this time.) Also hearing that The Leader is a weak villain and Falcon, (or the new one) isn’t too interesting.
Critics wise, I think the majority of the complaints are aimed at the script. I do wonder therefore, after Malcolm Spellman messed up Falcon and the Winter Soldier, why was he given a Captain America movie? I’m not trying to being antagonistic here. I felt like the writing on FATWS was poor to average. Especially for the villains, who I slated in my review. So if you had asked me after watching FATWS, should this guy write the next Cap movie? My answer would have been negative. In fact, when Spellman was announced as writing this film, I expressed strong doubts about his ability.
Great Success?
So what happens next? So far, Captain America: Brave New World is actually doing reasonably well at the box office. However, this is opening weekend, so it is to be expected. Recently though we’ve seen Marvel movies soar or fall based on word of mouth from opening weekend viewers. I am therefore expecting quite a second week drop to hit this film. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m not seeing great word of mouth for Brave New World.
Some rumors have the budget of Brave New World closer to $300M due to extensive reshoots. Now director Julias Onah has claimed those reshoots were not that extensive, but I’m not sure I believe him on this one. Other more official sources say $180M but, you decide whether Disney would make the real budget public knowledge at this time.

IF Brave New World cost closer to $300M, (that’s a speculative if), then it’ll need to make around $600M to break even. That’s a rough guess based on previous movies and the usual rule about double the budget for marketing with AAA films. I’m not convinced Brave New World, nor Thunderbolts* will be getting audiences to buy tickets in droves. Though, that may depend on word of mouth for the latter also.
Insider Jeff Sneider (he hated Brave New World) says Marvel are in panic stations about this film and Thunderbolts*. Yet, he says they are calm and positive about The Fantastic Four: First Steps. If Brave New World and Thunderbolts* don’t make a profit then questions have to start being asked of Kevin Feige. Crazy as that is to say.
Captain America was a big franchise for Marvel in the past. Not a box office juggernaut, but always praised by critics and fans alike. This is starting to feel like the first Cap bomb. I think that’s a shame for Mackie, he doesn’t write the scripts after all. You also know a certain crowd will blame all this film’s mistakes on Mackie being a black Cap. Sigh, such is the world right now.
So, what do you think of the Rotten Tomatoes score so far and the reaction online to Captain America: Brave New World? Thoughts below.
