A series of interconnected clay volumes will form the Red Sol Resort, a residential complex designed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura in Dhërmi, Albania.
In response to its site along the Albanian Riviera, the red-coloured resort by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura was designed to have an appearance that draws on historic fortified settlements and mimics the "vertical rhythm of the mountain landscape".
"The complex is inspired by the historic model of the 'kasbah', a fortified settlement or city positioned strategically in the landscape, often near the coast, and protected by its complex architectural form," the studio told Dezeen.
"Beyond protection, the intricate layout of interconnected spaces within the kasbah promotes shared use of areas and resources, strengthening relationships among residents."
Encompassing 12,750 square metres, the geometric complex will contain 19 villas and 20 apartment units. These will be organised across a series of red clay volumes conceptualised to be "an extrusion of the rocky terrain".
The villas will sit on a gridded layout composed of a sequence of identical squares that draw influence from the studio's La Muralla Roja housing project in Spain.
While square in plan, the volumes shift vertically in section – varying in height to accommodate the needs of each space and optimise views out towards the sea from each level.
Contributing to its castellated appearance, a network of staircases, bridges and walkways will connect the complex's volumes and provide circulation between its communal spaces.
A single grand staircase will run the length of the site towards the sea and be framed by a large portal at its end.
Renders of Red Sol Resort's exterior reveal an entirely red design, complete with clay walls and matching-coloured glazed ceramic tiles chosen to "bring all the forms together".
Pockets of greenery and private rooftop pools will be hosted within the volume's external courtyards.
Visualisations of the residences reveal contrastingly stark-white interiors similarly lined with glazed tiles.
Elsewhere in Albania, the studio is set to complete a mixed-use skyscraper composed of four elongated silo-shaped volumes in Tirana and a twisting concrete tower overlooking the capital city's Skanderbeg Square.
