Ray Nicholson broke out an impression of his iconic father, Oscar winner Jack Nicholson, while telling a wild story about the time he got tackled by former NBA star Kevin Garnett during a 2010 playoffs game.
Sitting down with Jimmy Kimmel on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Wednesday, the 33-year-old actor — best known for his “Smile 2” breakout last year and co-starring in “Novocaine” and “Borderline,” both in theaters this weekend — leaned back in hsi chair and channeled his father’s voice mid-story.
“Game 7, Lakers-Celtics, fourth quarter, tight game, Kevin Garnett,” Nicholson explained. That’s when he broke into his father’s cadence and mannerisms.
“My dad always told me, ‘When you’re sitting court side, watch the play, not the ball.’ And I’m like, ‘OK, Dad, whatever, you know,'” Nicholson said as he shaped back into himself. “The ball’s bouncing right towards me, and in my head I’m thinking, ‘I’m going to touch the ball in Game 7, I’m going to touch the ball.’ And then from the corner of my eye, I see Kevin Garnett running to me.”

“Kimmel” production then pulled up a clip of the moment. As the father and son are sitting, Garnett rushes to grab the ball but accidentally falls onto the younger Nicholson. But there was no bad blood; the actor, then just shy of 20, rose back up in excitement.
“He’s laughing at me. You see this? He’s laughing. My own dad is laughing,” the “Borderline” star lightheartedly exclaimed. He went on to say that Garnett checked in on him before moving on with the game.
“The man is on top of me shaking me like, ‘You OK? You OK?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes, Mr. Garnett, I’m OK,'” Nicholson said.
Just like Garnett showed out on the court, Nicholson is set to show off his acting chops in two films heading to the theaters this Friday as he stars in Dan Berk and Robert Olsen’s “Novocaine,” and in Jimmy Warden’s Margot Robbie-produced “Borderline.”
