New documentary captures NASCAR’s groundbreaking run at the 100th 24 Hours of Le Mans
Prime Video has announced that American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans, a feature-length documentary chronicling NASCAR’s audacious entry into the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans, will premiere on June 12. The film will be available exclusively on Prime Video across more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
Previously titled Garage 56, the documentary tells the story of an American stock car’s improbable journey to the most prestigious endurance race in the world. In June 2023, as the 24 Hours of Le Mans celebrated its centennial, NASCAR brought a Chevrolet Camaro to the global stage, competing alongside the likes of Ferrari and Porsche in a test of endurance, engineering, and sheer willpower.
The project was a longtime dream of NASCAR Chairman and CEO Jim France, who envisioned an American stock car tackling the grueling 24-hour challenge in France. To bring that vision to life, NASCAR tapped its winningest team—Hendrick Motorsports—to develop and race the car. With a driver lineup featuring Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, and Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller, the team embarked on an 18-month transformation to convert a stock car designed for three-hour oval races into one capable of surviving a full day on an unforgiving road course.
Directed by Brad Lockhart, American Thunder: NASCAR to Le Mans is produced by NASCAR Studios and Griffin Van Malssen, with executive production by Jeff Gordon (Hendrick Motorsports) and Tim Clark, John Dahl, Amy Anderson, Tally Hair, and Matt Summers (NASCAR).
