Pavement movie coming to theaters in May; NYC screenings with cast & crew Q&As

After playing at festivals for the past six months, the Pavement movie, PAVEMENTS, will finally hit theaters in May. It’s being distributed by MUBI who will have the exclusive streaming rights after its theatrical run.

Full details — or an official trailer — have not been shared yet, but PAVEMENTS will open at NYC’s Film Forum May 2 with an opening weekend featuring Q&As with the film’s cast, crew, and special guests. (Director Alex Ross Perry, the band and biopic cast all seem like likely participants.) Tickets for the Film Forum run will be on sale soon.

Last week, a trailer was released for Range Life: A Pavement Story, the fake band biopic starring Stranger Things’ Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus that is just one part of the very meta PAVEMENTS. The making of the biopic is also part of the movie, as is the production of a jukebox musical, alongside more traditional documentary elements. With the release date news also came a press release, explaining the Range Life trailer — which fooled some actual outlets — with a wink:

We’re thrilled about the excitement and enthusiasm for the RANGE LIFE teaser debuted last week. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it was – a tease from a parallel dimension where Pavement are expected to produce and support their own multi-million dollar awards bait biopic. Much as we would love to see a full feature film starring Joe Keery as the iconic Stephen Malkmus, our reality just isn’t ready to be changed forever by a film of such significant import.

Instead, we will be releasing the critically-acclaimed film PAVEMENTS, which features footage from the too-good-to-be-true RANGE LIFE, rooted in the context of Pavements’ boundary-shredding exploration of art and life. While RANGE LIFE is regrettably not a standalone feature film, Joe Keery deserves laudits and innumerable awards in the 2026 awards-calendar year for his portrayal as Stephen Malkmus in PAVEMENTS, for which he worked tirelessly to embody the ethos and aura of the Pavement frontman.

You can watch that trailer below.

The PAVEMENTS soundtrack will feature a new Pavement song.
