"Conceptually rich, beautifully shot, even cruelly funny." Dekanalog has unveiled an official US trailer for a Lithuanian indie drama titled
Drowning Dry, arriving in the US playing in art house theaters to watch this summer. The film originally premiered at the 2024 Locarno Film Festival, then playing the Viennale, Stockholm, Palm Springs, and Santa Barbara Film Festivals as well. It starts with a kick to the head. Mixed martial arts competitor Lukas has just handily defeated his opponent and celebrates with his wife, child, and friends backstage, setting the scene for a nimble combination of communal bonding and looming horrors. With their kids, they go swimming in a nearby lake, relax and discuss family finances. The title, a reference to the phenomenon of dry drowning, metaphorically underscores the layered & splintered narrative of grief and recovery. “I used the irregular repetition of the dry drowning condition as a structural element of the story to highlight the various ways of dealing with trauma," director Laurynas Bareiša explains. This stars
Gelminė Glemžaitė,
Agnė Kaktaitė,
Giedrius Kiela, and
Paulius Markevičius. It sounds intriguing. //
