Maggie Rogers & Sylvan Esso cover “Anthems” for new Broken Social Scene tribute compilation

A new compilation pays tribute to Broken Social Scene‘s essential 2002 album You Forgot It in People. ANTHEMS: A Celebration of Broken Social Scene’s You Forgot It In People is due out on June 6 via Arts & Crafts, and features The Weather Station, serpentwithfeet, Miya Folick and Hand Habits, Toro y Moi, Hovvdy, Ouri, Mdou Moctar and Mikey Coltun, Spirit of the Beehive, and more covering the album’s songs. The first single is Maggie Rogers and Sylvan Esso‘s electro-pop rendition of “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.” “‘Anthems’ is one of those songs that fundamentally changed my life,” Maggie says. “There’s something about the lyrical repetition that functions as a sort of mantra within the song and it made me understand at a very early point in my creative life that music could be a form of meditation. Broken Social Scene has long been one of my all-time favorite bands and covering it with my dear friends Nick and Amelia from Sylvan Esso was an absolute joy beam dream.”

“It was a joy to cover this beautiful song with Maggie,” Sylvan Esso add. “We all grew up loving this record- to be asked to cover ‘Anthems…’ together was an honor and led to a truly lovely time.”

Meanwhile, last year’s BSS documentary It’s All Gonna Break is screening in the US in May and June, including Brooklyn’s Nitehawk Williamsburg on May 28 and Nitehawk Prospect Park on May 29, NYC’s IFC Center on May 30-June 6, and Jersey City’s Monty Hall on June 19. The 5/28, 5/29, an 5/30 showings will feature a Q&A with BSS’ Kevin Drew and director Steve Chung, moderated by Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber. See all dates below.
