Lorde has shared a teaser of new music today (April 9) after wiping her social media accounts.

It’s a long time in the making, with the first hints of a new era coming with last August’s social media scrub, which saw the ‘Royals’ singer wipe her Instagram and X/Twitter accounts.

The changes to her social media came after she shared exactly one second of new music last year, posting several pictures of herself on her Instagram stories inside the studio. In the last post, she shared one second of a new, seemingly techno-inspired track.

Captioning the video, Lorde cryptically wrote: “will be back in touch”, fuelling intrigue about the arrival of her long-anticipated fourth album.

Today (April 9), she shared a brief clip on TikTok, which sees her walking through New York City’s Washington Square Park, listening to a new track that includes the lines: “Since I was 17, I gave you everything/ Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that?/ What was that?”

The post, which marks her first on the platform, naturally caused an uproar amongst fans. “SECOND COMING OF CHRIST,” commented one, with another adding: “WAIT WHAT?????”, which Lorde later shared a screenshot of on her Instagram stories.

Spotify also weighed in, declaring “LORDE SUMMER IS UPON US”. The musician’s official website has also gone blank.

The new teaser follows speculation that has been ongoing since 2023, when she also utilised social media to hint she was working on new music with yet another ambiguous Instagram post.

Rumours of a new era ramped up following her set at Øya 2023, with NME writing at the time: “Having kicked off the “Night Vision edition” of her ‘Solar Power’ tour a few nights prior in Ireland, Lorde’s new set is a far more minimal affair than the sun-chasing colourama of her previous era.

“This one is more fitting for speeding between clubs and afterparties in the witching hour than heading to the beach. To tap a recent meme, this Lorde seems a little more Oppenheimer than Barbie.”

She had also promised fans she would show them something new last year, and said: “No this is not the start of anything out there, just want u to know there’s a light on inside me .. show it to you soon.”

Notably, the ‘Ribs’ artist has released a new album every four years, beginning with 2013’s ‘Pure Heroine’, 2017’s ‘Melodrama’, and most recently, 2021’s ‘Solar Power’.

Earlier this year, she and Marlon Williams joined forces on ‘Kāhore He Manu E’ – with Lorde saying the collaboration was “one of my favourite things to do on earth”.
