“It doesn’t feel like a sequel. It feels like an original movie.” That’s how director Danny Boyle describes 28 Years Later in a new featurette video released by Sony this afternoon.

“When you’re doing a movie, you’re looking for those images that will terrify people. There’s a visceral element to cinema where you have a responsibility to push the envelope as far as you can go. I want that sense of suffocating intensity,” Boyle also notes in the featurette video.

Watch it below and don’t miss 28 Years Later in theaters on June 20, 2025.

The long awaited sequel to 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later puts Danny Boyle back in the director’s chair, with Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Ex Machina, Annihilation) scripting.

The second installment in this new trilogy will release in theaters on January 16, 2026. It’s titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and it’s directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman).

In 28 Years Later, “It’s been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory, and now, still in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amidst the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily-defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, he discovers secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but other survivors as well.”
