When Amy Poehler joined “Saturday Night Live” in 2001, New York and the rest of the nation was still reeling from the attacks 0f 9/11 just two weeks prior and no one was in a laughing mood.

“The whole country was like, ‘We’re never going to laugh again. Comedy’s over, that’s a wrap,'” she recalled on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast. “I remember thinking, ‘I hear you, yes, respectfully, I hear you, but …” she added.

O’Brien remembered the comedy chill at the time. “There was a famous  article that said irony is dead, like nothing will ever be ironic again. Except … it’s just like ‘Well, no. This is what humans do. Whether it’s the fires in Los Angeles, whether it’s 9/11. We get hit over the head, we are stunned, we collect ourselves and then we go back to doing what we do.”

She explained that “finding joy in things” is why she’s launching her new podcast, “Good Hang.”

“All I want to do now is laugh. That’s it. I want to be around people who regulate me. I want to find joy in things. It’s been a rough and rowdy 10 years and I just feel like it’s I just need to find own mental health, that kind of thing.”

The weekly series marks her latest podcast after the scripted comedy podcast “Say More With Dr.? Sheila” in 2023.

“Good Hang” will be produced in a partnership between her Paper Kite Productions and Spotify’s The Ringer. Poehler will also executive produce, with Ringer founder Bill Simmons and Paper Kite’s Jenna Weiss-Berman producing.

Poehler thanked her former “Weekend Update” co-host and frequent co-star Tina Fey with helping her land the high-profile “SNL” gig in the first place. “I had the privilege of Tina really vouching for me she was already there and [Rachel] Dratch and Horatio [Sanz] and people who were able to say, ‘She might be a good hire, take a look at her.'”
