Amazon Cancels “Cruel Intentions” TV Series

Amazon has been cruel to its “Cruel Intentions” TV series – the small screen remake of the famed 1999 film has been cancelled after one season.

The series debuted on the streamer in November 2024 and reimagined the original film by writer/director Roger Kumble which itself was a modern update of “Dangerous Liaisons”.

The series failed to make the Nielsen Top 10 Streaming charts and was critically slammed with just 24% (3.7/10) on Rotten Tomatoes.

The TV version takes place at an elite Washington, D.C. college where two ruthless step-siblings will do anything to stay on top of the cutthroat social hierarchy.

After a brutal hazing incident threatens their school’s entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do what is necessary to preserve their power and reputation – even seducing the daughter of the vice president of the United States.

Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Brooke Lena Johnson starred while Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher served as co-showrunners, writers, and executive producers.

It marked the last of several attempts to adapt the work for TV. NBC ordered a pilot in 2016 that would’ve seen Sarah Michelle Gellar reprise her role. Fox attempted a prequel series titled “Manchester Prep” which was recut into 2001 direct-to-video film “Cruel Intentions 2”.
