Jillian Lauren, an author and the wife of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner, was shot during an apparent confrontation of some kind with Los Angeles Police Department officers on Tuesday while LAPD and California Highway Patrol were looking for suspects in a completely unrelated crime.
She was later hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries and booked in absentia on charges of attempted murder.
According to LAPD, the incident began with a hit and run accident on the 134 freeway near the Figueroa exit. Three suspects exited their vehicle and fled on foot into the nearby northeast Los Angeles neighborhood of Eagle Rock, where they appear to have split up.
According to eyewitnesses, LAPD and CHP had a heavy presence in the neighborhood as they searched for the suspects, with streets and portions of the highway blocked off.
While searching for the suspects in the back yard of a house, police say they spotted a woman, since identified as Lauren, in a neighboring residence holding a handgun. According to TMZ, which first reported the news, police assert that Lauren ignored orders to drop the gun and instead pointed it at them.
Officers fired, and Lauren was struck in one of her shoulders, at which point she ran back into her house. There has been no report that Lauren ever actually fired on LAPD officers.
