Ed Sheeran has covered Chappell Roan and performed his new single ‘Azizam’ as part of an undercover busking set in New York. Watch below.
The singer-songwriter appeared in the latest edition of the ‘Subway Busking’ segment on last night’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (April 8).
Sheeran and host Fallon filmed the session at the 50th Street subway station below the Rockefeller Center in NYC. The pair disguised themselves as emos, donning black clothes, wigs, sunglasses, beanie hats and piercings.
“No one knows it’s gonna happen, no one knows that it’s Ed Sheeran,” Fallon explained, before introducing the duo as ‘Frat Poison’. Sheeran then launched into an acoustic rendition of Chappell Roan’s hit ‘Pink Pony Club’ in front of a crowd of fans on the platform.
After finishing the cover, Sheeran and Fallon revealed their true identities ahead of the former kicking off a stripped-back version of ‘Azizam’.
The pop star also shared a selfie of his emo alter ego on Instagram, writing: “Genuinely had a MySpace photo like this when I was 14.” See that post and watch the ‘Subway Busking’ performance in full below.
Last week saw Sheeran surprise fans in London with a pop-up acoustic set at King’s Cross station, as well as a performance on a pink open-top bus in the capital. “I loved seeing all the reactions of people on the street bopping to ‘Azizam’,” he wrote.
Sheeran went on to describe his upcoming new album ‘Play’ as “playful and fun”. The record will follow on from 2023’s ‘Subtract’ and ‘Autumn Variations’. It’ll see the star “stepping boldly into a fresh new phase for 2025”, having collaborated with producers and writers from across the globe on the project.
Sheeran revealed that his new LP was “done” last month. He later debuted a new track titled ‘Old Phone’ during an appearance on …Fallon. In an interview on the US chat show, he confirmed the names of his next five studio records, and teased plans for a posthumous album.
“I wanted to do 10 [albums],” he explained. “I’m kind of a bit obsessed with [Quentin] Tarantino, and I heard he was doing 10 films, and he’s got his side projects like Grindhouse. I wanna do my 10 and then every now and then do a side project.”
Elsewhere, Sheeran teased that a new track called ‘Sapphire’ would be released in the coming months.
In other news, it has been revealed that Sheeran will play an intimate set at Coachella 2025 next weekend.
Sheeran has also responded to a TikTok critic who said “his songs are good in the way that heroin is good for people”.
