Trump Weighs ‘Large Scale’ Sanctions, Tariffs on Russia After ‘Pounding’ Ukraine

President Donald Trump on Friday said he is considering “large scale” sanctions against Russia in an effort to force the country into a cease-fire deal with Ukraine.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease-Fire and final settlement agreement on peace is reached,” the president posted on Truth Social.

He added: “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”

His Friday post comes a week after a now-notorious meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House. The Trump-Zelenskyy meeting started off smoothly enough, with the president saying it was an “honor” to have the Ukrainian leader in the Oval Office; Zelenskyy’s visit was supposed to include a signed minerals deal between the two countries.

But the 50-minute conversation eventually went off the rails in front of the media, after Vice President JD Vance took issue with some of Zelenskyy’s comments.

“You’re gambling with World War III. And what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country that’s backed you far more than a lot of people said they should have,” President Trump said at that point.

Afterwards, in a post on Truth Social, Trump said Zelenskyy “disrespected” the U.S. and could only come back when he is “ready for peace.”

The two appeared to patch things up by Tuesday, when Zelenskyy said he wants to move past the “regrettable” meeting in order to work with the U.S. to negotiate “peace that lasts” in his country’s war against Russia.
