Tony Gilroy Says The ANDOR Story Could Expand, But It’s Up to Lucasfilm
As Andor gears up for its second season, one that will walk Cassian Andor right up to the doorstep of Rogue One, fans are starting to wonder: what happens after that? Now, we know Cassian’s fate is already sealed, but for the rich cast of rebels, Imperials, and other morally gray characters who’ve helped shape this corner of the galaxy. Could the story continue? In a recent interview with io9, showrunner Tony Gilroy made it clear that while Andor might be wrapping up his story, Lucasfilm could easily choose to keep the flame burning.“Well, they own it all, they can do as they wish,” Gilroy said when asked if he thinks Lucasfilm might revisit these characters without his involvement. “I mean we’ve made eight movies in five years. He added: “There’s a lot of ideas, a lot of new planets, a lot of everything in there; it’s theirs for the picking.”While Gilroy seems content to pass the baton, he’s aware that the show's bold storytelling, new characters, and atmospheric worldbuilding wouldn’t have happened without the support of some key people at Lucasfilm. “My linkage with Lucasfilm is primarily with Kathleen [Kennedy]. I primarily deal with her [and] Pablo Hidalgo [who] is the sort of keeper of the [story lore] over there when it comes to keeping things real. “He’s the historian and he’s the arbiter of what’s kosher and what’s not. I knew him from Rogue, we spent time on Rogue and that’s my primary point of connection with Lucasfilm.”And as for the man who started it all? “I’ve only spoken to George Lucas once after Rogue on the phone, I’ve never met him,” Gilroy shared.Gilroy’s time on Andor wasn’t a typical Star Wars experience, and he explained: “We kind of were left to be free-range here. We kind of ran wild, we kept testing. We tested the beginning, ‘We want to have him go to a brothel and kill two cops!’ ‘Okay!’ ‘“We want to hire the production designer from Chernobyl!’ ‘Okay!’ We showed what we wanted to do, and then we then we set about to do it, and they were just incredibly supportive.”Whether or not Lucasfilm builds on the world Andor carved out, the creative team didn’t hold back, and they got to the story they wanted to tell.Andor season two premieres April 22 on Disney+.
