‘The View’: Sen. Elissa Slotkin Says She Was ‘Just Trying Not to Be’ an ‘SNL’ Sketch in Response to Trump’s Joint Address | Video

Sen. Elissa Slotkin knew there was a lot of pressure in delivering the Democrats’ response to Trump’s joint address this month, and she was trying to avoid one outcome in particular: becoming an “SNL” target.

Stopping by “The View” on Tuesday morning, Slotkin admitted that when Sen. Chuck Schumer originally set the meeting to ask her to give the speech, she thought she had done something to upset him and/or her colleagues.

“It was true that Senator Schumer asked for a private meeting with me, and I said to myself, ‘I’m in trouble again. How is this possible? I’ve been a Senator for six weeks,'” she recalled. “And so I went in and I was expecting to be in trouble, and I was not in trouble. He gave me this honor.”

That said, Slotkin also noted that the duty to give the response has also turned into a “cursed” position, and she was incredibly nervous in writing the speech.

“I was just trying to not be a ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit,” she told the ABC hosts. “So we worked on it. We decamped to my family farm in Michigan with a couple of friends and advisors, and we just drilled down and wrote it.”

Joy Behar was curious whether Schumer had any notes or edits on the final product. “He actually, to his credit, said, ‘We trust you, and go and do it.’ And I said, ‘You know, I need to be able to write the speech that speaks like I’m from Michigan,’ right?” Slotkin recalled.

“So I think if it works for Michigan, it’s going to work for the country, and so I need to be able to do it the way I would do it,” she continued. “So he did not editorialize. He did not tell me what to say, and that was — I appreciate it.”
